Changthang Peaks *exploratory
We explore newly opened 6000m peaks and regions
With the opening of many new trekking peaks, and the new easy permitting system, we can go wild on
6000-6500m peaks. This is the first in a probable series of explorations in the Pangong and Ladakh Range peaks, and we
think these are ideal for three week trekking-climbing trips. Lets see!
We hope and think that the peaks in this area will be non-technical, although will take limited gear.
So we will use ice axe and crampons but can perhaps get away without using ropes - lets see (and expression that will
probably be used a lot!) You must have some prior mountaineering experience or have completed a basic mountaineering
course.
A big thanks goes to Bruce for inspiration and detailed trail notes.
Outline Itinerary
The itinerary is subject to change as I am still refining the itinerary, but the dates and expedition price are
fixed. It is likely sort of reverse the trek.
Day 1 - Sunday 29 July 2012 - arrive Leh 3400m
You should arrive in Leh today. We have plenty of stress-busting unwind time at the beginning of the trip.
2 - rest Leh 3400m
Time to relax or to explore, and the all important time acclimatizing. Leh is a sightseer's and photographer's
paradise.
3 - rest Leh 3400m
With the big jump in altitude tomorrow, we need further acclimatization in Leh.
4 - drive Taruk 4000m
On our way, we camp in peace.
5 - rest Taruk 4000m
Yes, yet another acclimatization day but there is a village and gompa to explore, or time to finish that book.
6 - trek 4240m camp
Up the broad valley we go, lets find a wonderful camping place!
7 - trek 4390m camp
A spacious valley with big peak views.
8 - trek 4560m Base Camp
We put ourselves in the best position to explore and climb.
9 - 4560m Base Camp
We take a couple of days to explore in the three different directions.
10 - 4560m Base Camp
Another day exploring and working out which peak we will climb.
11 - trek High Camp ~5000m
We now make a serious attempt on a peak, by making a high camp.
12 - rest/climb?
Lets see what the possibilities are, and how everyone is feeling. Perhaps we can even climb a peak today and
tomorrow!
13 - climb, stay High Camp
We attempt that 6000m peak, will be a long and tough day.
14 - Valley camp ~5000m
Returning to our 4560m camp for lunch, we continue trekking up the opposite Ladakh Range and find a good camping
spot.
