Kanchenjunga Adventure

"No combination of science and art can recall the scene, or the feelings of awe that crept over me during the days I spent in solitude amongst those stupendous mountains."
- Joseph Hooker 1848

From the lush green lowlands to the incredibly dramatic highs of the old trading route to Tibet and the impossibly beautiful spires and sheer glittering faces of Kanchenjunga and its sister peaks, this spring trek ahs everything for both the old hand and the newcomer to the high places of Asia.

Our journey begins with a flight to the hilltop airstrip of Suketar, where we meet our crew, and trek in easy stages on the classic route to Kanchenjunga Base Camp, through lush forest and cardamom groves as far as Sekathum, where we turn away to follow the Tamur Khola towards Olangchung Gola, the Tibetan region only recently opened to trekkers. We rest two nights here to acclimatize and explore this ancient settlement, explored by the famous botanist Joseph Hooker in 1848, before moving on up the Yangma Khola to our exploration of the old trading route to Tibet, the 5700m Gang La pass.

The highs continue in Hookers 19th century steps, over the Nango La pass to Ghunsa, and on through the high pastures of Khambachen and Lhonak to Pangpema and the most stupendous mountain views on our planet.

We take time to walk up the 6000m viewpoint near Pangpema, then head for our last passes, the Sele, Sinion, and Mirgin, on the high traverse to the south side of Kanchenjunga and the beautiful walk through the forests and villages of the Simbuwa Khola to Suketar.

This is a trek of incredible contrasts, a kaleidoscope of mountain moments, the vivid green of spring in the lowers valleys, remote outposts of thriving Tibetan cultures, and highs that will provide lifelong memories. And we do it in the professional style we are proud of, with the best staff, equipment, and of course, food!
