Chota Kailash Exploratory Trek

In the far north east of the Indian state of Uttarkhand are the regions known historically as Garhwal or Kumaon, once small kingdoms in their own right. About as far east as you can go in this region, close to the Nepali border, is a peak known as Adi, or little, 'Chota' Kailash, and in 2010 we are taking the best of the autumn season to explore the region.

We hope to be allowed to make a circuit of this Kailash, known for being an exact mirror image of Kailash in Tibet that lies 110 km away.

We know that trekkers are allowed to trek to the base of  Kailash through the Yankti Valley - and also that groups are allowed to trek to Panchuli Base Camp on the west side of the peak; but we want to make a circuit...and talks are ongoing.

We do know that it is off the beaten track, remote, and very beautiful - so join us and our usual India team of Lobsang, Tenpa, Punsok and co for some classic exploration!

Detailed itinerary

Day 1- arrive Delhi

Joel will be at the airport to meet you, look for the Project-Himalaya sign. We drive to our hotel in Parhar Gang, the main bazaar of Delhi, and over dinner, discuss gear and our adventure.

Day 2 - Overnight train to Kathgodam

We have a full day in Delhi, and depart at 8pm for our overnight (first class) train to the foothills of the Himalaya, arriving in the cool dawn.

Day 3 - Drive to Pitoragarh

We know the hills of this region well after five years of running our Nanda Devi treks, and will be pulling over after an hour on the road for tea and breakfast; then we have a full day of driving to Pitoragarh, set in a pretty valley dubbed by some as 'little Kashmir' where we will probably have some bureaucracy to deal with - Lobsang is heading up to the region in May to get the on the spot information...and we hope to be on the trail next day...

Day 4 - Drive to Mangti

We are actually following the old trade route into Tibet and the route that the Indian and Chinese governments allow pilgrims to use at times to visit the Tibetan Kailash;  from Mangti the trek route is only loosely known; but we have a range of options; we are applying to be allowed to cross the Shin La and make a complete circuit of the mountain, and if we do we will cross the pass and explore the upper Lassar Yankti valley - if this is not possible we will attempt the Nama pass towards Panchuli Base Camp - a huge range of options.

Day 5 - 27 Trek

We have our usual India team; Lobsang, our sirdar, plus Tenpa, Kunsang, and Punsok; and our core team for the Nanda Devi region from Munsiari. We have the best lightweight trekking gear, and a whole caravan full of food. Lobsang will be going up into the region in May to check out routes and paperwork .

Day 28 - Drive Kathgodam and overnight train to Delhi

One of our favourite trains, the Raniket Express, leaves at 9 pm...

Day 29 - Arrive Delhi and depart
