Mr Rai - porter

Kangchenjunga trek 1998

These pictures were all taken on my first exploratory visit to the region in 1998.
We travelled rough but had a great time.

Who needs electricity?
We were exploring and this girl is cooking us lunch because her mother was busy.

The awesome Jannu 7710m
It has now been renamed Khumbukarna but few people use the name.

Rodney and I drinking tungba in the days before bottled beer in the hills.

Dawa, nice guy and climbing guide

Moon over Jannu from near Gupha Pokhari

Pasang was our sherpa-porter on my first trip
to the region in 1997

The gompas (temples) of the region have an atmosphere of timlessness

Sharing tea with our porters. Yep, it was a wild trek. Rodney could only come in Feb, a cold month, and our budget was very limited. But we had a fantastic trek and even got to 6000m.

Kangchenjunga School Project

The huge Kangchenjunga range taken from near Gupha Pokhari.

You can fly in to Suketar missing out the arduous bus journey and 4 days walk, but you also miss this view...

However you trek the region, it is a fantastic trek, one of my favourites.
