Northern Ireland Everest Expedition 2003
the summit pictures

The summit pictures. We summitted on 31 May, myself around 7am and Banjo around 8am, Nepali time.
(But we climbed from Tibet).
And yes, it was the PERFECT day!
Rod Mackenzie has an amazing 360º panorama from the summit, opens in a new window [needs QuickTime].

The third step, not difficult climbing but in crampons and with an oxygen mask on,
it is challenging enough, especially to descend unless you are willing to put your
full weight on the dodgy ropes.

Near the summit the route we followed turned away from the easier snow slopes to steepish scree and rock. Shishapangma is in the distance, slightly left of Cho Oyu 8201m, the white flat-topped peak (normally climbed from the other side). In the centre with the big face is Gyachung Kang, the 15th highest mountain, just below the magic 8000m mark.

The summit of Everest

At last! There's the summit.

the view from the summit of Everest

Those layers! Sue Fear and a Himalayan Experience sherpa ascend the last section to the summit.

Terence Banjo Bannon on the summit of Everest

Banjo on the summit! He was the last person to summit that season and had the top to himself.
He took this picture with a Fujifilm disposable camera.

Jamie summitted about an hour earlier spending around 45 minutes on the summit without bottled oxygen.
On reflection, I should have used oxygen, I would have appreciated the view even more.
Nobody offered to take my picture and it was only when I got my slides back, I realized I was dripping blood from my nose.
Shows how oxygen-impaired everyone else was, and how cold it was - I couldn't feel it!

Two sherpas from Himalayan Experience place katas. (Sorry, I didn't find out their names).
