Lhasa - Drepung Monastery

Drepung is the biggest monastery in Lhasa, now with around 750 monks, down from a maximum of 10,000 in its prime. It is a peaceful place to visit and with an extended kora (circumambulation) we got some light exercise as well.

We wandered around and found surely the biggest game of snakes and ladders in the world, no good photo though.

Inside most monasteries and gompas taking photos is forbidden, which certainly makes them more peaceful, but for a fee it is possible in some places. Here are some of the results.

Butter was one of the biggest exports from Solu and Khumbu (Everest region in Nepal) and was mainly to fuel the butter lamps in Lhasa, with its slightly rancid, sooty smell and consequent slippery floors. Now it is made to burn cleanly and comes in plastic packets - Jamie
