2008 Manaslu Expedition 8163m

September-October -- Nepal -- standard (Japanese) route

We offer comprehensive yet good value base camp support with reliable staff that really do care, and we include a few extras that other companies charge extra for, or don't provide at all.

Itinerary

We trek to base camp but we can arrange a helicopter instead, please ask for a quote.

Day 1 - Arrive Kathmandu 1350m

We meet you at the airport, look for a sign with your name on it. Jamie will meet you in Kathmandu and introduce the crew.

Days 2-3 in Kathmandu

Two free days in Kathmandu for relaxing, packing and preparing. You can leave any gear which you don't need during the expedition at the hotel.

4 - drive then trek to Arughat 570m

Bus and trek to Arughat. Note that we are trekking in during the monsoon, expect possible delays due to rain - and have a good umbrella!

5-12 trekking to Sama Goan (Ro) 3525m

13-14 - Sama Gaon

We have two or three nights here to acclimatize. The crew and porters will go ahead to BC.

15 - trek Manaslu BC

16 - Manaslu BC

17-41 (25 days) climbing Manaslu

Good luck! You are responsible for yourself while above ABC. We provide a walkie talkie, you need to bring AA batteries, they take six at one time.

42 - pack BC

Please ensure you have removed everything from the mountain.

43-48 - trek out to Arughat

NOTE: Dasain, the most important holiday of the Nepal year runs from 30 September to 14 October Oct and so finding porters to clear BC may be difficult. Expect delays with your bags and expedition gear if the expedition does go to the full duration. The trek out should take around six days.

49 - drive Kathmandu

Day 50 - depart

Expedition extension

Most companies who offer BC support expeditions don't allow the expedition to go on past the end date. We do. There will be a charge of $50 per person per day, to a max of $150 a day total, to cover costs.

Attitude

This is a BC-ABC services expedition. Your crew are very experienced and there to manage the logistics of the expedition and cook for the expedition. Work with them, they are great guys.

You live together for more than a month so please have consideration for your fellow team members, crew and and other mountaineers. Being polite and reasonable goes a long way, even minor dehydration makes almost anyone surprisingly irritable and intractable.

Climbing difficulties

Do search the internet carefully. The book "On top of the World, conquering the world's 14 highest mountains" may also be useful.

Andrew Lock says "Watch for serac issues between camp 1 and camp 2 and some avo potential between camp 2 and the plateau.  Also, be aware that the plateau gets covered in cloud most days, making it difficult to find your high camp after the summit.  Read Messner’s account and take a GPS."

Trek itinerary

The Manaslu trek is one of Nepal's best. You start in the low, hot and wet country and soon move through tight gorges to higher alpine country and to base camp. Bring a good umbrella! See the guide-assisted expedition itinerary.
